Montcalm and Wolfe Francis Parkman 9781117791364 Books

A well written, literary history of a critical time in development of American continent...and of two very important individuals during that time. There is a lot of detail in this book ... some can be skimmed when reading, I think with little damage to the story. Amazing to think Parkman could do the very detailed research in the second half of the 19th century. Wow. Parkman could teach some researchers today "how to do it".

This story explains a lot of boundaries drawn, languages spoken in North America today...about .relationships between various Europeans and Native Americans and between Native Americans. . This should be an integral part of American history taught today.

Montcalm and Wolfe Francis Parkman 9781117791364 Books Reviews

"Montcalm and Wolfe" is the preeminent history of the French & Indian War to be written in the 1800s. Recent research has added to our knowledge, but for the most part Parkman's work remains trustworthy. It is especially valuable for those who want to see if he might be the source for the opinions of others.

One criticism of this book, which is a matter of opinion more than of fact, is that Parkman takes the side of the English too much to be considered objective. In my view, he is clear enough when it is that he is stating facts and when he is expressing his own prejudices, that this is not a defect in the work as a whole. Simply put, care must be taken to distinguish the two.

The format and typography are unfortunate. The text is clear enough, but it betrays its origins as a transcription (by typewriter) rather than a photoreprint. Nevertheless, this book is a "must" for the serious student of the French & Indian War; and this transcribed edition makes it affordable.
"Montcalm and Wolfe" is simply a wonderful work of history. Francis Parkman is considered by many scholars to be the greatest American historian ever. This book is his masterpiece, written in 1884 as the final volume of his multi-volume work "France and England in North America." It tells the story of the Seven Years' War (also known as the French and Indian War), which is probably the most historically decisive war ever fought on the North American continent.

Parkman writes with precision, eloquence, and objectivity. With his vivid and fast paced narrative, he demonstrates a wonderful flair dramatizing history. At the same time, his tremendous knowledge about this vast and complex subject is evident on every page. For me, the most fascinating parts of this book were the chapters which described the conflict for Acadia, and the ultimate forced evacuation of the Acadians by the British; Braddock's defeat; and the battles of Louisbourg and Quebec. Parkman's descriptions of these key events, and the personalities behind them, make them seem to come alive.

Parkman writes in the romantic style popular in the late nineteenth century; yet, his prose is of such high quality that it never seems dated. In fact, as I was reading, I found it difficult to remember that "Montcalm and Wolfe" was written over a century ago! This book, which is already a timeless classic, is essential reading for those interested in the Seven Years' War. Most highly recommended.
I thought Francis Parkman's Montcalm and Wolfe was a brilliant story of the battle for supremacy between the British and the French of colonial America. Written in the late 1800's Parkman paints a compelling and fascinating read. I enjoyed the English and French notes, not simply for the reason that I could understand every French word but because being of French heritage and learning to pronounce the language in school I enjoy the beauty of the French language and the sounding of the words. The story was great. From George Washington's men murdering Jumonville and the surrender of Fort Neccessity to the ambush of Braddock by the French and Indians near the Mononghahela. That was before the war officially started. The bumbling of British commanders and chief, ie. Shirley Loudoun, Abercromby to the great commoner William Pitt. William Pitt's final selection of Jeffery Amherst to seal the French coffin in North America. Stories of the seige and massacre at Fort William and Henry, the bungled British defeat at Ticonderoga. Bradstreet's capture of Fort Frontenac, Amherst and Wolfe's capture of Louisberg, Forbes and Bouqouet recapture of Dusquene and Wolfe's defeat of Montcalm at the climactic battle of Quebec on the plains of Abraham. Throughout Parkman keeps his readers enthralled and riveted, and his mastery of the American and Canadian wilderness is impeccable. Robert Rogers and his rangers sneak attack on Abenaki village enthralled me so much and him and his rangers other adventures captivated me so much I purchased the book War on the Run, another book about fighting on the colonial frontier.
The content of the book is great - 5 stars, as for this re-print I'm giving it 3 stars. This has to be the worst reprinting that I've seen in the US. Its cheaply made and nowhere near worth the price is sells for. It doesn't have the book title on the binder which in my opinion makes it good for nothing but the fireplace (after reading of course) - so you put in on a bookshelf and there is nothing to indicate what the books is - makes me wonder what the library would do with, probably toss it in the dumpster. It is cheaply made with binder splitting almost guaranteed after a second reading - thus I'm giving it 3 stars for the book - 5 stars for content. The content is outstanding, giving a reader an insight on British and French jockeying for power in North America and interactions with the Indians. It gives an understanding of what led to the Revolutionary War and the small role played by Washington (you know the 1st US President) in the French Indian War. It also talks of what was going on in the World - especially the Seven Years War, but it is mostly on the machinations of the French and British.
